Hello,
I was going through the diary of my great grandmother. In it, she records the death of her mother, Wambdi Autepewin (aka Eagle Woman Who All Look At; aka Mrs. Matilda Galpin - a Hunkpapa + Two Kettle woman who died 1888)
See below. I am interested in any help in translating the Lakota that my great great grandmother spoke before she died. See bold:
Dec. 1, 1888 Start for Cannon Ball with Dick.
Dec. 2 - Arrive at Cannon Ball. Find mother suffering.
Dec. 3 - Mother felt a little better.
Dec. 4 - Not so well.
Dec. 5 - Mother felt worse.
Dec. 6 - Thursday. 15 minutes past seven Mother looked around and said "Washte (note: this is hard to read) shterle...Conesh tokel etembro ablee breash wachinblese kecho mate coya atape".
Dec. 8 - Saturday. Mother rested from 2 o'clock A.M. until evening.
Dec. 9 - Mother suffering again.
Dec. 10 No change.
Dec. 11 - the same
Dec. 13 Thursday. Mother growing worse. Louise came in the evening.
Dec. 14 Friday. Mother set on the chair. Father Craft came to see Mother and blessed some holy water and gave mother the ablution. Alma fainted and had to go to bed.
Dec. 15 Saturday at half past 10 o'clock Mother sitting on chair looking around and reached her hand and said "O". I asked "What mother?" and she said "There stood a beautiful little girl." Then (she) asked Louise "Daughter, is that you?" Louise said yes and she said Mechonkse. Then she asked Alma and then me. Susan came in the evening.
Dec. 16 - Mother growning weaker all the time. Father Craft came again.
Dec. 17 Susan went home.
Dec. 18 Poor mother laid all day in a coma and passed away at 15 mins past nine o'clock p.m.
Dec. 21 Friday - ..(mother) was buried by the side of our little sister Annie.
Appreciate any help. Thanks,
Barbara
